Spider Vein Treatment (Sclerotherapy)

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure to reduce the appearance of small, superficial veins, often called "spider veins." Spider veins are an extremely common problem of unsightly webs of red, blue or purple veins that appear primarily on the lower extremities. It's estimated that at least half of the adult female population is plagued with this common cosmetic problem. Dr. Tyrone treats spider veins with a procedure called sclerotherapy. In this rather simple procedure, veins are injected with a sclerosing solution, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. The technique involves injection of a tiny amount of medication into the veins through a very fine needle. This procedure may require multiple treatments as not all veins may respond to the initial treatment. Typically, Dr. Tyrone finds that each session will remove approximately 50% to 75% of the spider veins treated, and an acceptable result may be obtained after 1 to 3 treatments. Following the procedure, patients are asked to wear a compression garment for 1-2 days, as this will significantly improve the response rate, and reduce the risk of complications.

Types of Veins

Varicose Veins

Abnormally enlarged veins that appear most often on the legs. They are typically blue, purple, or skin-colored; and they appear as dilated, twisting and bulging vessels that may be raised above the surface of the skin.

Spider Veins

(Also called telangiectasias) Clusters of tiny blood vessels that develop close to the surface of the skin. They are often red, blue, or purple; and they have the appearance of a spider web. They are commonly found on the face and legs.

Reticular Veins

Blue/green veins located just beneath the skin, reticular veins are larger than spider veins but do not protrude like varicose veins. These vein abnormalities can be caused by several factors, including prolonged sitting or standing, obesity, pregnancy, age, heredity and gender. About 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some type of vein problem. Varicose veins affect half of people 50 years of age and older.

Benefits Of Sclerotherapy

Whether your veins are abnormally enlarged and bulging (varicose), spidery and clustered near the surface (spider), or blueish/green just beneath the skin (reticular), Sclerotherapy may help you!

Sclerotherapy is designed to help shrink veins by collapsing them and allowing them to return to being absorbed in the body. This procedure helps removes abnormalities and may restore the look of your skin before any surfacing veins.
